This year, amaze everyone with do-it-yourself decorations. You can also use apples to craft your own original Christmas ornaments and truly enter into the Christmas spirit.

The atmosphere in the run up to Christmas is pure magic: the warm lights of the decorations, traditional songs and aroma of Christmas sweets filling the air unleashes unique sensations. Often during this time, we let our imaginations run free to create all kinds of decorations and turn our houses into the perfect place to celebrate Christmastime.

Here are some ideas to get inspired.

Apple garland

The perfect decoration to hang on the front door to welcome all your guests.

To create the garland you will need:

  • apples
  • baking tray
  • lemon
  • plastic coating spray
  • wood core (wicker)/ polystyrene ring for garlands
  • hot-melt adhesive.

Already thinking you’re not one for home crafts? Don’t worry, even though this do-it-yourself decoration is very easy and can be made in a short time, the wow factor is guaranteed.

  1. Firstly, core the apples and slice diagonally into thin pieces (as if they were rings).
  2. Cover the baking tray with baking paper and place the apple slices one after the other.
  3. Squeeze a little lemon juice over the apple slices and then uniformly spread it with the help of a pastry brush.
  4. Let the apple rings dry in the open preheated oven for 5 hours.

This step works perfectly when done the evening before, so you can leave the apples in the oven to dry while you enjoy a Christmas movie.

If you don’t have much time, you can also use the microwave (900 watt for 5 minutes) as an alternative.

SUGGESTION: using the plastic coating spray, cover the apple slices with a thin layer to make your decorations last longer. Thus, your decorations can be preserved for next year too.

  1. Now you have to decide whether to use a wood core or a polystyrene ring for your garland. In the first case you will just have to use the hot glue gun to attach the apple slices to it. If you decide to use the polystyrene ring, simply cover it with a nice Christmas ribbon. Wrap it around the polystyrene ring until it is fully covered and fix the ends using pins or hot glue.
  2. Now comes the fun part: get your creative juices flowing!

Use the hot glue gun to stick the apple slices on the core you have chosen however you like. Have fun decorating your garland with whatever meets your personal taste. Cinnamon sticks, star anise and orange slices, dried in the same way as the apple slices, are perfect for the task.

To create an elegant composition to decorate your table for Christmas lunch, you will need the following materials:

  • platter
  • floral foam
  • iron wire
  • pruning shears
  • branches
  • apples
  • berries

  1. Place the floral foam in the centre of the platter. If you also decide to use dried flowers, the foam has to be preferably slightly wet.
  2. Use the pruning shears to cut the branches and insert some of them into the foam, covering it as a sort of a grid.
  3. Chop some of the apples into thin slices to dry afterwards (using the same procedure as for the garland).
  4. Attach the apple slices and the berries to the iron wire, which will be inserted afterwards into the floral foam. In so doing, they will be well fixed in place.
  5. Now you can decide whether you also want to add some whole apples to the decoration. The apples must be cleaned with water and dried using a woollen cloth to get them nice and shiny.

Would you prefer something very easy to create, but which is nonetheless very pretty?

Get yourself a nice wicker basket and embellish it using some red berries. Put some well-cleaned red apples inside – because we all know the colour red immediately makes us think of Christmas – add some nuts and some cinnamon sticks and the work is done!
